Renowned car design house, Italdesign, displayed the Ferrari GG50 show car in a prominent location at the entrance to the Detroit Motor Show, following its warm reception at last year's Tokyo Motor Show. Designed and created by Italdesign to celebrate Giorgetto Giugiaro's 50 years in the business of car design, Giugiaro himself penned the GG50 by hand, as he has done for the past 50 years.

It is unlikely that the GG50 will ever make production, though it was given full backing by Ferrari, after Giugiaro discussed the idea with boss man Luca di Montezemolo late in 2004. The show car is based on the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, with the mechanicals unchanged save for a repositioned fuel tank allowing more boot space. Overall the GG50 is a little shorter than the Scaglietti, though it appears a lot more compact thanks to sculpted panels and large rear lights; asymmetrical unlike the original Ferrari's.

Boot space is increased from the Scaglietti's 240 litres to 270 litres, or up to 500 litres with the rear seats folded. A regular hatchback lid has been added to make full use of this space. That's all very well and good, but how many Ferrari owners actually think about practicality? It's an odd concept, and really a little indulgent on Italdesign's part. Still, it got our attention, didn't it?
