Though only available as a two-door and with only two seats, the smart fortwo is ostensibly the only real city car here. What it lacks in outright spaciousness it makes up for in manoeuvrability thanks to diminutive dimensions, making it ideal for taking advantage of those parking spaces nobody else wants.

The fortwo has been around for a while now, but its futuristic styling has aged very well, thanks to looking like nothing else on the road. So long as you don't need to carry more than one passenger, nor much luggage, then the smart is an amiable companion. Two occupants sit comfortable, with a good view of the road ahead and in general the smart is well made. The clutchless transmission takes a little getting used to, but it is completely at home on clogged streets. Basic fortwos start below £7,000, though you'll probably hanker after the sporty Brabus versions.
