Concept points way to new GTi and rally car
Peugeot provided precious little information about one of its most outstanding exhibits at the
Geneva Motor Show. Sure, the new 207 hatch is one of the most important cars in the French manufacturer's line-up, but in basic format it is hardly exciting to the average show goer. The 207 RCup concept car, however, is a whole other kettle of
poissons.
Here is a concept that points to either a new assault on the World Rally Championship by Peugeot or an extreme high-performance derivative of the new 207 hatch, or both if we're lucky. Admittedly, the RCup looks more ready for the Special Stage than it is for the showroom, with widened track and an interior only marginally more accommodating than a modern rally car, including full roll-cage, competition instrumentation and large levers for the sequential gearbox and handbrake.
The engine isn't exactly normal either, with a claimed 280bhp from just two litres. That's without turbocharging by the way. We already know that the next Peugeot 207 GTi will feature a new turbocharged engine developed in collaboration with BMW, so the likelihood of seeing this unit in production is slim. Hopefully the new GTi retains some of the RCup's distinctive styling though. We especially like the drooping nose that echoes the big cat's jaw outline and the gaping Peugeot grille really suits this application.
