BMW showed the world its Vision at the Geneva show this week.
Based on an X5, the Vision is a hybrid-powered SUV that uses a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine and electric motor.
Combining the two, the Vision achieves 43.5mpg combined economy and carbon dioxide emissions of 172g/km.
BMW has not forgotten about performance and the Vision covers 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds.
The electric motor recoups energy when the car is slowing down and stores it in batteries to help supplement the turbodiesel engine.
There are also solar panels on the roof of the Vision to help pre-heat the engine to make it more efficient.
BMW has also smoothed out the Vision's styling to make it more aerodynamic and even the alloy wheels have been designed to reduce wind resistance.
