SEAT's new Ibiza

SEAT wowed Geneva show visitors with its SportCoupé Bocanegra concept car, which forms the basis of the next Ibiza.

Insiders from the Spanish firm say the car is more than 90% of the way to how the production model will appear.

Only the jewelled dash instruments, big alloy wheels and black mouth (which is where the Bocanegra name comes from) will not make it into production.

The new Ibiza is on sale in the UK from this July with prices expected to start at £8,000.

Designed by Lamborghini's former head stylist, Luc Donckerwolke, the Bocanegra was one of the stars of the show.

It has sharply creased lines and a bold, sporty stance, which reflects SEAT's drive to move away from being seen as a maker of bargain cars.

The Bocanegra featured a 1.4-litre TSI twin-charger engine with turbo- and superchargers.

This engine is already in use in the Volkswagen Golf and will make it into the next Ibiza with the option of a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed DSG sequential manual 'box.

SEAT is also planning a new family saloon that is expected to follow the Bocanegra's looks and be on sale in 2009.
