Mitsubishi 3000GT, Technofest

Forget the Evo for a moment; Mitsubishi's sporting heritage runs wider than just the hotted up Lancer. The 3000GT is a 3.0-litre twin-turbo machine that wowed when it was introduced in 1990. A two-plus-two coupé, the 3000GT features a 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine with 281bhp driving through a complex four-wheel drive system. The entire 3000GT is a technical showcase; it features four-wheel steer as well as active aerodynamics among its impressive technical arsenal. Inside, the technological feast continues with everything electrically operated and plenty of gauges monitoring everything imaginable.

It's fast and capable in standard guise, but like all its Japanese competition here it benefits from some tweaking under the bonnet. Do so and you can have an extremely rapid sports car that also doubles up as a great grand tourer. The best thing though is that it's cheap, the 3000GT now available for under £4,000. That's a huge amount of fun for not a lot of money.

The 3000GT from £3,000.
