Undoubtedly, Audi's sportscar racer, the R10 TDI, has been the most successful diesel-fuelled race car to date. Launched in 2006, Audi won first time out with its new racer at the 12-hour Sebring endurance event, but it was the same year's 24 Hours of Le Mans that cemented the R10's success, as it became the first diesel car to win the epic race.
Since then, Audi has continued to develop the car while competing in the American Le Mans Series. Only recently - and with the help of a few rule changes - have some of its petrol-powered rivals caught up. However, the 2008 edition of the Le Mans race looks likely to be headed up by diesel cars, where fuel consumption is just as important as outright speed. Thankfully, Audi will not have it all its own way this year, as Peugeot has a new diesel rival that looks to have the pace of the Audi, if not yet the proven endurance. Watch this space as the story unfolds.
