We've been extolling the virtues of diesel-powered hot hatches for a number of years and the VW Group has been at the forefront of that revolution. SEAT, the Spanish arm, put its money where its mouth is this year by entering a pair of TDI-engined Leons in the British Touring Car Championship. Its belief in the technology was rewarded this weekend with the first ever diesel-fuelled victory in the series.
Jason Plato - one of the sport's more experienced racers - not only took the top step on the podium, he also broke the Donington Park lap record on his way to victory. Plato also managed second place in the second race of the weekend (despite carrying extra weight), while his team mate, Darren Turner, took his turn at the front for the second diesel-fuelled victory of the weekend. Vauxhall may still top the championship, but the significance of the victory won't be lost on enthusiasts.
