Forget cards and candles, Mazda is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its innovative rotary engine with a limited run of uprated RX-8 coupes. Only 400 of the appropriately named RX-8 40th Anniversary Limited Edition will reach the UK and all will have their own individually numbered plaque.

The RX-8 marks 40 years since Mazda first launched its Cosmo Sport in 1967 and the Japanese firm has now made more than two million rotary-engined cars. The Anniversary RX-8 is available in two unique colours (Metropolitan Grey Mica or Crystal White Pearlescent) and also has 10-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear wing, blue foglights and 40th Anniversary badging.

Inside, there's black leather and Alcantara for the seats' upholstery, carpet mats with the Anniversary logo and sill covers with the each car's individual limited edition number etched in.

But Mazda has not stopped there. The RX-8 Anniversary features an upgraded suspension, with firmer Bilstein shock absorbers all round and polyurethane bushes for the front suspension to sharpen responses and reduce noise in the cabin. All Anniversary models are based on the 228bhp version of the RX-8 and cost £24,595, with the order book now open.
