BMW is quite dominant in certain aspects of the car market, but Audi's efforts to topple its rival have not gone unnoticed in recent times. The latest attempt is the new Audi A5 coupé and its V8-powered S5 brother pictured here.

Even a glance is all that is needed to see that the 3 Series Coupé is firmly in Audi's sights, with the S5 sitting between the more compact TT and the Porsche 911-rivalling R8 sportscar. Saying that, the new Audi is much bulkier than the 3 Series, which we assume is to appeal to the North American market and the A5 versions concentrate on quality, fit and finish rather than out-and-out driver appeal.

The S5 version however looks to redress that balance. At its heart is a 4.2-litre V8 utilising direct injection to produce 354bhp and 440Nm of torque. Though the more powerful V8 from the RS4 will be reserved for a likely RS5 model, the S5 does come as standard with the same rear-biased quattro four-wheel drive. Can't wait to try that one out for ourselves!
