Ford Kuga pounces in Geneva

The Geneva Show marked the official debut of the production-ready Kuga, Ford's competitor in the growing compact SUV/crossover market. Sales in Britain start in June this year.

To begin with, there are just two trim levels and a single engine to choose from. Entry-level is at £20,495, for the Zetec model, with the higher specification Titanium costing from £22,495.

It's no surprise that the powerplant on offer is a turbodiesel, as that's what the vast majority of UK customers want. Ford offers a 134bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder, which is claimed to achieve 44.1mpg on the combined cycle and a competitive 169g/km of CO2.

Standard specification seems generous too, with all models fitted with keyless start, 17-inch alloys, air conditioning and ESP. Buyers of the Titanium model additionally receive automatic wipers and lights, partial leather trim, cruise control and other extras.

The Kuga is priced to directly compete against the new VW Tiguan, with the Nissan Qashqai lower down the food chain and the likes of the Nissan X-Trail and Land Rover Freelander slightly above.
