Amid all of the excitement about Volkswagen's new Scirocco coupé, the German firm also launched the new Golf TDI Hybrid concept.
This Golf uses a three-cylinder 1.2-litre turbodiesel engine and electric motor to give 83.0mpg economy.
The combination of diesel and electric motors also helps this Golf emit just 89g/km of carbon dioxide.
The 74bhp turbodiesel engine is supplemented by a 26bhp electric motor that can power the car on its own for up to an hour for zero emissions driving.
A DSG twin-clutch semi-automatic gearbox is fitted with seven gears and electronics switch the engine off when the car is not moving to save fuel.
The Golf TDI Hybrid has smoothed-out aerodynamics, including a new front grille and smaller air intakes to reduce drag,.
There's also lowered suspension and the front spoiler from the Golf GTI Edition 30 to help the Hybrid cut through the air more efficiently.
Volkswagen say the Golf Hybrid is only a concept at present, but insiders say that this is the next step in VW's BlueMotion programme of low emitting, economical cars.
