The scrap scheme is well underway, seeing thousands of old cars exchanged for new ones. Yet, scrapping these five oldies would be a crime. The Government scrappage scheme is already responsible for taking tens of thousands of old cars off the road and in their place putting the same amount of brand spanking new ones on the road - each with a whopping £2,000 off the sticker price. Some makers - like Nissan, Mitsubishi and Citroen - are bettering the deal by offering the same money off their new metal, but for cars that are younger then ten years old.
However, some folk claim scrappage is a bad thing because a glut of new cars, no matter how clean and efficient, will have a greater impact on the environment than simply keeping all the old ones on the road instead. But when a shiny new German car can be had for less than £5,000 under the scheme (specifically, a Volkswagen Fox), it's easy to see why people are tempted. So, we thought we'd fight the corner of the old car this week by giving you some used car heroes, all priced at around the same as the littlest VW with scrappage, but each a much more exciting choice than a basic city car. You'll be surprised what you can have.
