Jeep plans to build on UK Cherokee success

With the Frankfurt Show only days away, American car giant the Chrysler Group has released details of what we can expect to see at its stand. Alongside Chrysler's new Grand Voyager and Sebring Cabriolet, and Dodge's Journey MPV crossover, Jeep is promising to build on the 50,000 Cherokee sales sold in the UK with its bold new 4x4.

According to Peter Lambert, Managing Director of Chrysler UK, the Cherokee has been "redesigned and now takes on a more rugged, classic Jeep look." From images released, the new Jeep has bigger, squarer headlights and a more pronounced jaw line, blending into thickly blistered wheelarches, whilst retaining a simple rectangular front grille. The boxy profile has a mildly modern look; however the front headlight / indicator arrangements are a bit disorganised and seemingly misplaced.

Jeep has seen fit to install an independent front suspension and new five-link rear suspension to tackle European roads with greater control; given that rivals from BMW, Land Rover and even Honda are at least moderately good at it, it's down to Jeep to make sure its new car is capable of competing for a share of the European market. To propel the Cherokee, the same 2.8-litre turbodiesel from the upcoming Chrysler Grand Voyager has been used and further updated mated with either a six-speed manual or five-speed auto 'box.

Interior improvements over the old model include greater cargo storage space and the promise of better seating comfort. Jeep is also keen to point out an additional 'Sky Slider' full-length canvas roof, which is available as an optional extra.

There is no word on pricing yet, but expect further details to emerge from Frankfurt very shortly.
