We've been hearing rumours and receiving the odd detail about Rolls-Royce's new Ghost model for a while now, but the luxury firm has finally revealed the full specification. The sub-Phantom model will be powered by an all-new 6.6-litre V12 engine with an output of 563bhp, allowing the occupants of the opulent leather and wood interior to be spirited away to 62mph in just 4.9 seconds. That's quick, the Ghost positioned as a Rolls-Royce where you might enjoy doing the driving yourself rather than employing someone to do it for you.
Behind the wheel you sit on a raised 'command' position driving seat, which Rolls-Royce suggests affords the best view of the road ahead. It'll also give you a good view of the power reserve gauge, Rolls-Royce fitting this unique instrument rather than a conventional rev-counter. Assuming you've plenty in reserve then also assisting in your drive is a number of high-tech systems including a head-up display, night vision, radar controlled cruise control and a lane departure warning system among numerous other driver and safety aids.
It might be aimed at the Rolls-Royce owner who likes to drive, but that doesn't mean the pampering in the back is any less than in its Phantom relative. Like it you enter the back seats via rear-hinged 'coach doors', these closing automatically once you're in the sumptuous leather seats. Coming as standard with rear seat entertainment systems and individual climate control, Rolls-Royce takes the passenger's comfort so seriously that it has designed the air suspension to compensate when there's only one person in the back. If the kerb outside Harrods is too high, or low, the suspension can raise or drop to ease your entry and exit. And if it's raining? There is a pair of Teflon-coated umbrellas stowed in the doors.
It's all the height of sumptuous comfort and class, blended with all the modernity that you'd expect from the very latest luxury saloon. Officially unveiled later this month at the Frankfurt motor show, the Ghost is available to order now. No prices have yet been announced, but don't expect any change from £250,000, and a good bit more if you want options like the matte finish on the bonnet and windscreen surround.
