Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch

The previous generation Vauxhall Astra was a little dull to look at and not all that exciting to drive either. Vauxhall has injected a fair chunk of desirability into its new Astra, thanks in part to the marketing of the extreme VXR brand.

Vauxhall has not, as yet, unleashed a diesel-powered VXR car, so hot hatch fans will probably not take as much notice of the SRi-branded Astra, which makes do with a subtle body kit and sharp alloys to distinguish itself from the rest of the range. Not that the Astra Sport Hatch looks dull in any form; this is a great hatchback shape, looking more like a coupe than a regular hatch.

Our favourite version in the extensive line-up is the 1.9-litre turbodiesel, sporting 150bhp and a little 'Sport' button on the dash that stiffens up the suspension, steering and throttle response. At over Ł18,000, this car looks a tad expensive next to the newer Leon FR, but is still worth consideration.
