Toyota has developed the greenest fuel cell car in the world to date with its FCHV-adv (fuel cell hybrid vehicle-advanced).

The new fuel cell is called the FC Stack and is used in the FCHV-adv SUV to give it a range of up to 515 miles.

This is considerably more than the previous version's range of 205 miles.

It has been achieved by making the fuel cell system 25% more efficient with technology such as regenerative braking and reduced energy consumption.

Regenerative braking recycles energy as the car slows down that would otherwise be wasted.

High pressure hydrogen tanks supply the fuel cell, while a small 89bhp petrol engine is used alongside.

Toyota is now conducting driving trials of the FCHV-adv and insiders say this technology is set to make it into a production car within the next five years.
