Mazda is to reveal its new 3 model at the LA Auto Show next month.
The new car shares its look with the recently introduced and very well received Mazda 6 and Mazda 2 ranges.
Its American debut explains Mazda's decision to reveal its new C segment competitor in saloon guise, the US market preferring small saloons to hatchbacks.
European buyers will be offered a five-door hatchback model, this likely to debut at the Geneva Motor Show this coming March.
A hugely significant model for the brand, the 3 is responsible for almost one in every three Mazda sales globally.
Boldly styled headlamps and Mazda's now trademark lower grille bring the 3's styling in line with the rest of the range.
Mazda hasn't released any technical details for its new 3, but the engine line up will be based on the existing petrol and diesel line-up.
It's likely that in line with the current environmental zeitgeist and Mazda's drive for efficiency that the new 3 will be lighter than the model it replaces.
Anticipated to be on sale in Europe mid-2009, the new Mazda 3 should start at around £12,000 for the entry-level cars, rising to around £20,000 for the range-topping MPS version.
