Volkswagen Fox
I don't think I'm alone in not associating the VW brand with the bargain basement end of the market. Instead, the German company is linked more with the quality end of mass-production. The Lupo, for instance, though a tiny city car, was not particularly cheap, yet it was well made.
The Lupo has recently been superseded by the new Fox shown here and despite being a lot bigger and featuring larger engines on the entry-level models, it is significantly cheaper, with prices starting at just £6,590 for the 1.2-litre model. The only other car in this quintet that can beat that is the most basic Daihatsu Charade and although that car's fuel economy is exceptional, the Fox is undoubtedly the choice of the more image conscious amongst you. We think it's worth the extra in insurance and fuel, though over 46mpg on the Combined Cycle isn't all that bad either, is it?
