Lexus concept hints at next RX

Lexus says concept; we say early version of the next RX. That'll be the LF-Xh concept SUV, which will be one of the main attractions on Lexus's Tokyo show stand, alongside the LF-A two-seater sports car that is getting ever nearer to making it onto the road.

The LF-Xh uses Lexus's proven Hybrid Drive system with a petrol-powered V6 engine, electric motor and continuously variable transmission. For the LF-Xh, Lexus says it has refined the whole powertrain and the concept delivers notably improved economy and emissions than the current RX 400h in showrooms. The LF-Xh moves this concept closer to reality than the earlier LF-X, which used a 4.3-litre V8 engine with 300bhp.

Lexus has also finessed the exterior of the LF-Xh compared to the RX. Where the current RX is all soft curves, the LF-Xh has a sportier, more assertive stance, though you can see a family resemblance in the window line and shape of the rear pillar.

Tokyo is also another chance to get a look at Lexus's LF-A sports car, complete with 500bhp 5.0-litre V10 engine and carbon-fibre composite body. Together, Lexus says this will be enough to see the LF-A hit a top speed of 200mph. Expect to see the LF-A on sale at the beginning of 2009.
