Downsizing is fine if you're able to sacrifice space, but for bigger families needing lots of seats there are fewer options. Thankfully Hyundai offers its i800, a people carrier with massive carrying capacity. With room for eight inside the Hyundai offers one more seat than the more usual seven-seat MPVs, which even if you don't need it underlines just how much bigger it is than its rivals.

What's significant here though is that the i800 costs just £19,495 - pennies for something so massive. What's more, Hyundai is promising a lower price, lower specification model soon, which should be even more appealing to those families feeling the pinch but needing spacious transport. A five-year warranty should get you through the credit crunch and inexpensive running costs - the 170bhp turbodiesel returns an official combined consumption of 33.2mpg - means the i800 makes a great deal of sense.
