Sales of aftermarket satnav systems have burgeoned over the last couple of years as they get ever smarter, cheaper and more feature rich. Let's be honest though, it takes a special type of car enthusiast to get exited about opening up a satnav on Christmas morning, and an even more special person not to say, “now you'll never get lost on the way to the kitchen” just after the wrapping comes off.
The thing is, as clever as the modern satnav is, buying one is the motoring equivalent of buying a toaster for the kitchen - and who'd give a loved one a toaster for Christmas? (Unless it's a really good one that does four slices.) Still, if you're so inclined, and you like the idea of licking a suction cup every morning, the ubiquitous TomTom is a good way to go. Priced from around £130 to £450, with some models offering such enticements as a free tank of fuel, features include voice activation, Google searching and Bluetooth hands free calling. Or you can buy a Garmin. Or a Navman. They all do pretty much the same thing.
And actually, it is a pretty swanky gift for someone who drives a lot.
