A brand new stereo head unit was once the first port of call for DIY interior disco pimping, providing a mesmeric array of dancing LCD EQ displays (usually blue) and dispensing with usefully proportioned buttons in favour of miniscule ones that you could barely see, let alone push.
These days, though, a new head unit is so much more than a new place to slot a CD into, or a neon beacon for opportunist thieves. The Alpine CDE range, for example, is a proper media entertainment hub, giving you full control over your iPod or iPhone through the unit. There's a USB port for you to stick a dongle full of music into, too, and although it's not cheap (at just under £200), it's a proper good pressie for any petrolhead.
For a more cost effective solution, Blaupunkt do some cheaper, but no less tasteful, head units from around £60 upwards. That's some cheap dashboard decoration if you ask us.
