BMW 535d Touring
We need a comfortable motorway car that is reasonably quick when required, yet can also carry either four adults and all their camping gear or a few more people on trips around the campsite and track. It would be useful too if the car of choice did not require a remortgage to fuel it to Le Mans and back, despite cheaper French fuel.
The Audi may be the best all-rounder for this trip, but BMW's 5 Series Touring comes close. It may not have the extra ride height of the Allroad, nor the option of four-wheel drive (which could be useful this year if the forecast rain appears), but it still ticks many boxes. In particular we'd opt for the 535d version that is equipped with a superb twin-turbocharged diesel unit. BMW claims 34.4mpg on the combined cycle, but you'll probably compromise on the fuel consumption when you feel the urge available from low revs. This is a seriously fast car, regardless of the colour of the pump you park next to at the fuel station. Fun to drive too.
