Detroit has kicked off in style, but there's plenty of substance too as some truly stunning eco metal hits the stands. Here's our top five. The 2009 Detroit motor show was all set to be a lacklustre, pessimism-ridden affair thanks to the tales of woe coming from Motor City at the end of last year. However, it seems the car makers have spied a unique opportunity to clean up their acts in style, as the opening day saw a bevy of green beauties unveiled to shocked onlookers.
Far from being a collection of show stand mirages, designed only to detract attention from the doom and gloom, most of the metal on display is genuine forward thinking from makers coming to terms with the need for greener mass transport. Fortunately for us car nuts, it's looking more and more like we won't have to sacrifice style or enjoyment to be kinder to the planet.
So, here's our pick of Detroit 2009's sexy green machines; the ones we can't wait to get behind the wheel of. How times are changing.
