Extended Quattroporte range offers more to the keener driver

The quirky yet loved four-seater from Italian manufacturer Maserati has had a welcome upgrade to coincide with this week's Frankfurt Show. The company, which recorded its first trading profit for fifteen years in this year's second quarter, is hoping a more focused, sportier Quattroporte will further boost its current success.

Called the Quattroporte Sport GT S, it features a new 'racing' set-up that has lowered the front ride height by 10mm and the rear by 25mm. Stiffer springs and dampers will help to reduce body roll and pitching, whilst bigger, more effective brakes developed in collaboration with Brembo ensure the GT S can haul back its 400bhp when needed. The brakes themselves are composite dual-cast discs, made from a combination of traditional cast iron and lighter aluminium. Given the Quattroporte uses 20-inch dark-chromed alloys, there was sufficient room to increase front brake discs to 360mm.

Using the same sonorous 4.2-litre V8 as the rest of the Quattroporte range, the Sport GT S is fitted with an automatic six-speed gearbox, which can be controlled via paddles located behind the steering wheel. Maserati claims that the new automatic car actually uses nine percent less fuel than a Quattroporte DuoSelect during non-urban driving.

Already an imposing sight, the Sport GT S is even more impressive to behold than other models in the range. Exterior modifications see side windows and two double exhaust pipes finished in black, whilst inside, the cabin features carbon-fibre and aluminium, along with newly designed front seats offering additional lateral and leg support, should you be so inclined to test out the more accomplished handling. Much of the interior will be a combination of Poltrona Frau leather with Alcantara covering central seat sections, door panels and the steering wheel rim. The grippy Alcantara material can be had in one of five colours: Beige, Pearl Beige, Grigio-Grey, Nero Black and Blu Trofeo.
