With greater refinement and bolder, more attractive styling, Mazda has unveiled its all-new Mazda6 in Frankfurt. The Japanese firm has focused on evolving the 'zoom-zoom spirit' that is a prime philosophy for the design of its cars. The new 6 is said to emphasise a 'more emphatic Mazda character' having been grafted in a sleek new form - hatchback and saloon versions have a remarkably low coefficient of drag rating of 0.267, Mazda claims.
The Mazda6 is also a looker, with a rounded and attractive front end and side panels created with minimal fuss, having no heavy creases along the waistline, but an emerging 'shelf' that develops over the rear wheels. The car's fore-and-aft lift balance has been improved so the new shape is now claimed to be much more stable at high speeds than the old car.
Along with exterior improvements, the interior has been redesigned using curved surfaces and materials with a 'controlled glossiness' quality, which could take the Mazda somewhere closer to rivals from BMW and Audi.
Where German competitors make up most advantage however, is in the driving department, and so, following a Jinba Ittai philosophy, Mazda has sought to develop the 6 with a more driver-focused edge. Translated, the idea means a 'driving experience that creates oneness between the car and driver'. Attempting to create 'oneness' Mazda has fitted larger front brakes and a revised multi-link rear suspension which promises to enhance handling, stability and ride comfort. The new 6 will share the RX-8's electric power steering, reducing fuel consumption by a claimed two percent.
Powering the new car will be a choice of three petrol engines: a 168bhp 2.5-litre unit and improved 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre engines carried over from the older model.
There will also be a MZR-CD 2.0-litre turbodiesel variant as used in the previous car.
No word on pricing or launch date yet, but expect more details shortly.
