Like so many car makers at this year's Detroit extravaganza, Ford has been keen to show off its green credentials. However, Ford has gone much further than bio-fuel versions of existing models; it has unveiled its new Verve concept that shows the Blue Oval is determined to sell small cars in the big country.
Alongside the three-door Verve concept that has already been seen at previous shows, Ford showed off the four-door saloon Verve that is likely to be the car it pushes in the USA. The Verve is set to become the new Fiesta later in 2008 and is also a crucial model for the Ford in Europe.
Small car sales have been increasing rapidly in the USA and the Verve will be offered with a 1.4-litre EcoBoost engine and automatic 'box for American buyers. This engine and gearbox package is also likely to be sold in the UK, along with a 1.6-litre petrol engine and 1.4-litre turbodiesels.
Ford has also confirmed the new Fiesta will form the basis of two other models, though Ford is yet to say whether that will include small SUV and coupé ranges. The four-door Verve is unlikely to be sold in the UK, but we can expect to see three- and five-door versions on sale later in 2008.
