A diesel-powered Impreza WRX is on the way from Subaru and will hit UK showrooms in 2009.
The Japanese firm is aware of increasing environmental issues and the cost of fuel, so is looking to broaden its performance range.
The engine will be based on Subaru's recently introduced Boxer Diesel, the world's first 'flat four' turbodiesel engine for a passenger car.
It will boast around 200bhp and Subaru insiders say they are aiming for 0-60mph in less than 6.0 seconds but with economy of more than 40.0mpg.
A diesel-engined Impreza joins the Subaru range in the UK late this year with the same 150bhp Boxer Diesel already seen in the Legacy estate.
