When the Qashqai was unveiled, Nissan was truly taking a brave step. Arguably the first proper 'crossover' car, the Qashqai mated the positive qualities of a hatchback with those of an SUV - or that was the intention at least. What resulted was a tall, fat, SUV-like shape sitting on a platform not much bigger than a medium hatch, which at first looked slightly awkward.
That didn't matter though, because evidently we all understood it and hence Nissan can't make them fast enough. A high, commanding driving position, loads of interior space, hatchback-like dynamics and a comfortable ride combine to make the Qashqai a brilliant family car - and a blueprint that many have followed since. Compare it to the dreadful Nissan Almera and it makes even more sense. A true niche definer, the Qashqai single-handedly made family cars interesting again. And it's made in England.
