Ok, so we're aware that putting a saloon first in this list seems odd, having said that thing in the intro about saloons being the default choice for families back in the day, and this list championing the many and varied options for buyers in our avant-garde age. But, mainstream saloons have come so far recently that we had to include one. And the one we've included, the Insignia, is a shining example of why the mid-level saloon has got plenty of life in it yet.
Everyone knows that the Insignia's predecessor was the epitome of bland sales rep motoring, but Vauxhall's newcomer turns that on its head. It owes plenty to premium German rivals, but that's not to disparage it, because the Insignia is good looking, good to drive, fun, and most importantly, no longer a car its owners are simply lumbered with when they'd rather have an Audi A4. Reasonably priced and entertaining behind the wheel too, the Insignia puts Vauxhall back near the top of the pile.
