Credit crunch green deals

Consumer champion Which? has highlighted one benefit of the credit crunch for consumers as green cars get cheaper and cheaper. With dealers desperate for sales Which? found some huge savings on some of the greenest cars you can buy in the UK today.

Savings of more than £2,000 were found by Which?'s researchers, bringing down further the cost of green motoring for environmentally minded motorists. Given the majority of Britain's greenest cars are small and already competitively priced that means huge potential savings for motorists.

The biggest saving Which? discovered was £2,519 off Fiat's 1.3-litre Multijet Panda Dynamic, that discount bringing its cost down from £8,990 to just £6,471. The little Panda is able to return an exceptional 65.7mpg on the official combined cycle, while its 114g/km CO2 emissions make it tax friendly, too.

Other big savings discovered by Which? included £2,108 off a Citroen C2 1.4 HDi Vibe and £1,592 off a Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI 70. Richard Headland, editor, Which? Complete Guide to Greener Driving, says: “Many people are put off green cars as they usually think of the Toyota Prius, which costs around £17k. However, there are some great eco cars which are much cheaper - even more so at the moment. We've found some incredible deals for less than ten grand.”
