Mercedes GLK and Kim Cattrall at Detroit
It's due on American roads soon, but will first make its appearance on the big screen in a starring role in the TV spin-off Sex And The City film. We're talking about the new Mercedes-Benz GLK of course, the compact SUV likely to be a big hit in the 4x4-obsessed US market. Unveiling the car at Detroit Mercedes might have managed more attention for the vehicle itself, if it hadn't invited Sex in the City star Kim Cattrall to the proceedings. Very much in character, the flirting between her and CEO Dr Zetsche at the unveil was cringe-worthy to say the least.
It did, however, divert attention away from the fact that all Mercedes had to offer aside from its new GLK was a mildly facelifted SLK and a production ready - and pointless to all but the handful of gazillionaires who might want one - Maybach Landaulet on its stand. In between the agonising flirting Dr Z did manage to re-iterate the message being repeated around the show: that diesel and smaller cars have a future in the USA. The 'Vision' GLK in both its Freeside and Townside guises was shown with Mercedes' emissions-reducing Bluetec turbodiesels, though whether America is ready yet for the Smart fortwo that was also on display is another matter.
