RX-8 gets three-pronged update

Mazda says that its update of the RX-8 revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit concentrates on the styling, performance and packaging, all of which have been key reasons for the success of this coupé. For that reason, Mazda has not meddled too much with the formula.

From the outside, keen RX-8 fans will spot new front and rear bumpers, larger exhaust pipes, circular LED rear lights, and a new 19-inch alloy wheel design. Otherwise, the RX-8 remains as before and the rear-hinged back doors are still a signature part of the RX-8.

To take care of the performance part of their brief, Mazda's engineers have changed the rear differential to give keener acceleration, while the less powerful engine option now produces 202bhp. The 228bhp top-spec engine remains untouched, but it does have a revised six-speed manual gearbox.

Mazda has also come up with a new sporting package for those wanting to make the most of their RX-8's handling. The R3 package comprises firmer suspension, new rear spoiler, side skirts, fog lights and a different front bumper design. The 19-inch alloy wheels also come with different tyres for more grip, while inside the driver and front passenger are held by new Recaro sports seats.

The whole of the revised RX-8 range benefits from a new dashboard that includes a rev counter that varies where the red line comes in as the engine warms up. There's also a new steering wheel and reshaped seats front and rear to give a little more space.

The revised RX-8 goes on sale in the UK towards the end of 2008 and prices are expected to start from £22,000.
