New Peugeot 3008 unveiled

If it seems like a strange time to bring a car to market that looks like a 'gas-guzzler', you're right. However, Peugeot is keen to stress that its new 3008 is far from one of those. For a start, there's not a 4x4 drivetrain in sight.

Until 2011, that is, when the 3008 will house a unique hybrid system that will turn it into a truly green SUV - and the French maker's first hybrid, in fact. The 'Hybrid 4' system places an electric motor near the rear suspension, driving the back wheels, while the petrol engine drives the front and the two connected 'by wire' using no mechanical parts. What's more, it's a diesel hybrid, and Peugeot claims a 35 percent emissions reduction over an equivalent diesel.

The standard 3008 is front-wheel drive, based on the 308 hatchback platform and powered by a range of 1.6-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesels, with power outputs ranging from 110bhp to 163bhp.

Peugeot hopes the 3008 will become an 'aspirational' motor for those wanting something more than a standard hatchback, without the stigma of a 4x4 - the same remit as the Nissan Qashqai. So, the newcomer majors on quality, hatchback-like drivability and SUV-like practicality. Lofty aims - we'll let you know what it's like when we drive it.

Still, Peugeot claims quality will be class leading, and the cockpit certainly looks smart, with a row of rocker switches on the dash providing a highlight. A clever traction control system means the two-wheel drive crossover should cope admirably with rougher terrain if needs be. Features include an electric parking brake and, for practicality, a split folding tailgate.

In addition there's a myriad of options available for the 3008, including a head up display and a 'distance alert' system that keeps the car a safe distance from the one in front, automatic air conditioning with an air quality sensor, directional bi-Xenon headlamps, parking sensors and telematics.

There's no word on prices just yet, but we'll see the 3008 in showrooms by the end of 2009.
