BMW shouldn't be too disappointed to see its 7 Series in fourth place in this list, especially as the German company owns Rolls-Royce these days. What might be a surprise is that it is beaten by the Jaguar XJ. We will admit that the 7 Series is actually a better car than the Jaguar on most counts, but its (verging on the clinical) capability and opinion-splitting styling just does not warm it to us in the same way as the characterful, if flawed Jaguar.

Under that sober-suited exterior, the BMW is a decent rival even to Bentley's Flying Spur, especially when powered by BMW's wonderful V12 engine in the 750i. Most buyers will no doubt be eying up the more frugal 730d version, which combines decent pace with acceptable fuel economy. For the golf player with friends, there is plenty of rear legroom and boot space too though the BMW's macho image may not suit all.
