Chevrolet was one of the first automakers to create an all-electric production vehicle when it launched the EV1 in select US markets back in 1996. The Chevrolet Volt concept revealed the company's latest E-Flex technology, a system which is perceived to be the future of automotive propulsion systems.

First shown in Detroit, the Volt concept used an electric motor sourcing energy through a lithium-ion battery pack, which can be recharged through a conventional electrical outlet or via an on-board generator run by a 1-litre three-cylinder engine optimised to run on petrol, ethanol or bio-diesel fuel. More recently, the architecture was made to contain a hydrogen fuel-cell rather than an internal combustion engine.

When running solely on electric power the Volt can achieve a range of 40 miles, but the bio-fuel engine extends its range to 640 miles. When run on hydrogen it can travel up to 300 miles while producing zero emissions.
