Ford Airstream

The Ford Airstream concept, unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, is heralded as a modern crossover by Ford.

Powered by a plug-in hydrogen hybrid fuel-cell developed by Ballard, the all-electric Airstream is claimed to weigh less than current fuel-cell prototypes and return the equivalent of 41mpg on the Combined Cycle. The Airstream concept can travel 25 miles on electric power alone before the fuel-cell has to recharge the vehicle's lithium-ion battery pack, but the range increases to 305 miles when the fuel-cell is fuelled by hydrogen.

Designed in partnership with Airstream, a company known for creating riveted caravans, the Ford Airstream concept features a 'floating' instrument panel with touch-sensitive controls and lounge-like seating at the rear. A 360-degree screen in the centre of the rear area creates ambient mood settings, and doubles as a modern lava lamp or a virtual fireplace.
