Lotus has built a Concept Ice Vehicle to provide support on the Moon-Regan Trans Antarctic Expedition.
Looking like the weird offspring of a microlight, a sledge and a science-fiction spaceship the Concept Ice Vehicle uses a propeller and skis to navigate the ice.
Lotus is the perfect company to have built the Concept Ice Vehicle as it has to be light, the Hethel firm famous for its skills in producing featherweight vehicles.
Its roll in the Moon-Regan Trans Antarctic Expedition is as a scout vehicle to search for weak spots in the ice ahead of the main convoy.
To enable it to find any weak spots in the ice the Concept Ice Vehicle features ground-penetrating radar.
Being lightweight allows the Concept Ice Vehicle to work effectively on thinner ice, it also allows the support team to easily manhandle it over any obstacles.
Four and a half metres long and equally as wide the CIV spreads what little weight is has over three independently suspended skis.
Ensuring it has as little environmental impact as possible in the Antarctic the propeller engined CIV is fueled by biofuel.
Tested in Sweden the Moon-Regan Trans Antarctic Expedition will cross the continent from the west coast of the South Pole and cover a distance of around 3,000 miles.
