Frankfurt debut: Bentley Mulsanne

Bentley is teasing us with the introduction of the Mulsanne, drip-feeding details of its new flagship saloon before its mid-2010 introduction. At VW's pre-show event the Mulsanne was driven on stage, with the only real snippet of additional information Bentley revealing being that it is powered by a 6.75-litre V8 engine - just like its predecessor.

What's all the fuss about?

That engine might have the same capacity as the old Arnage, but Bentley has reworked it significantly. With new lighter internal components it's far more efficient, the big V8's environmental credentials raised by featuring the ability to close off cylinders when they're not needed. It'll also have bio-ethanol capability, allowing even greater drops in emissions from its huge tailpipes.

Anything that stands out?

Aside from finally seeing the scale of the car and peeking inside at the beautifully hand finished interior there was one snippet of info we managed to squeeze out of Bentley, that being its 885lb.ft of torque. That's incredible, and should ensure that the big saloon is even more effortlessly fast than its predecessor.

When can I buy one?

We're sure if you ask nicely and have a substantial cheque you can order one now. You'll not get it until sometime next year, but that'll give you plenty time to go through the extensive wood, leather and paint choices to create your perfect luxury car. Prices have yet to be officially announced, but figure on at least £200,000-£220,000 to start with. That's relatively cheap when compared to rivals from Rolls-Royce and Maybach.
