Frankfurt debut: Kia Venga

With a slight hint of Mitsubishi Colt, the Kia Venga hit the stands as the latest prong in a product offensive that aims to establish Kia as a major European player. The Korean maker reckons the Venga adds some excitement to a sector it calls 'humdrum' - that sector being the small family MPV one. About time, too.

What's all the fuss about?

As ever, Kia is banging a massive drum so that we'll listen to how original and exciting its latest car is. And while it's certainly not the most exciting thing in Frankfurt - not by any stretch - it's always good to see a brand new production model. It's based on the 'No3' concept that debuted at Geneva, although its obviously been watered down somewhat for production into a shape that, if we're honest, isn't going to set anyone's pulse racing. Kia does promise it'll be a mighty fine steer though (our words), and has also confirmed that the name doesn't in fact pay homage to our second favourite Dutch Europop act - it's Spanish-derived.

Anything that stands out?

It has three warranties. Count them: there's a five-year 'whole car' warranty, a seven-year drivetrain warranty and a ten-year anti-corrosion warranty. It's notably bigger than the Kia Soul too, which means it should be better at being a proper family car than Kia's other small crossover is. Four engines (two petrol, two diesel) will be offered, though the power outputs will vary depending on market. The two diesels will be of the 'U2' family that we drove recently in the Kia cee'd, in 1.4- and 1.6-litre forms. The two petrol units are of the same capacity, and every engine will be available with Kia's ISG engine start-stop technology.

When can I buy one?

Early next year, as is the norm for cars being unveiled at Frankfurt. Kia hasn't nailed prices and spec just yet, but there'll be no prizes for guessing that it will major on value and undercut European rivals offering similar space.
