Renault is pointing the way for its small hatch future with the Zoe Z.E. Concept that uses an electric motor. It also has solar cells on the roof to help charge the battery and keep the cabin at the right temperature.
What's all the fuss about?
The Zoe is a small hatch with four seats that shows Renault is determined to offer families a realistic electric vehicle without compromises. The 95bhp electric motor gives decent performance and can run for up to 100 miles between charges, so it's ideal for the average commute or family needs. Also, with scissor front doors and butterfly-opening rear doors, the Zoe is always going to cause a fuss on a motorshow stand.
What makes it so green?
As well as the electric motor and the latest lithium ion batteries, Renault has come up with a roof that is covered in solar cells. These help charge the car's battery as it drives along, increasing its range and further reducing emissions. These cells are also used to monitor and control the cabin's air conditioning so there is no energy wasted there.
When can I buy one?
Renault says a production version of the Zoe will arrive in showrooms sometime in 2012. Details such as the way the doors open are unlikely to make the finished car, but expect to see the retractable rear spoiler that helps with the aerodynamics of the Zoe.
