The Exige has spawned many a special racing or hardcore version. This is the latest, the Cup 260 for 2010, which is better than the 2009 version in a handful of very useful ways.
What's all the fuss about?
Not so much a fuss about this one as a general sense of déjà vu. That's not to say it's garnering no interest, it's just that, well, we've seen trackday Exiges before. This is the fastest, most hardcore one yet mind, so there's no shame in having a good poke around it. It sees with 62mph in 4.1 second because it's got a handy 288bhp per tonne, and because it's nice and light (890kg) it uses only one gallon of fuel every 33.2 miles and emits just 199g/km of CO2. Owners will enjoy its liberal use of carbon fibre and the fact its chassis is 30 percent stiffer than the outgoing car's at the back.
Any new technology?
In a nutshell, nope. However, it's a much improved version of the lightweight technology Lotus has been using for years. Moreover, Lotus's stand does boast a very impressive new piece of technology in the form of the Range Extender Engine.
When can I buy one?
Now, assuming you've got the £46,000 it costs and a predilection for track based racing, because the myriad of Lotus racing options is available for the Exige Cup straight from Hethel, including slick tyres and a roll cage.
