Volkswagen is not hanging about with its rapid Golf models. Hot on the heels of the GTi comes the new Golf R, which packs 266bhp into its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. It also has four-wheel drive to carry on where the previous generation R32 model left off.
What's all the fuss about?
The Golf R is the quickest accelerating production model VW has ever made, cracking 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds, so this is big news on its own. There's more, however, in the details of the new R's four-wheel drive system. New technology means the four-wheel drive can apportion power more effectively to limit any scrabbling from the tyres. There's also a six-speed DSG twin-clutch gearbox to deal with the engine's power on the way to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
Anything that stands out?
You won't miss the Golf R when it drives by. New deeper front and rear bumpers, LED daytime driving lights and 18-inch alloy wheels (with the option of 19-inch rims) give the Golf R a purposeful look. This is added to by the twin rear exhaust pipes. Inside, the R has unique sports seats finished in grey Alcantara and black mesh fabric, while the dials have 'electric blue' needles.
When can I buy one?
The Golf R growls into UK showrooms in December, though Volkswagen has yet to confirm the price. Running costs should be affordable, though, thanks to combined economy of 33.3mpg and emissions of 199g/km, both of which are significant improvements over the previous R32 model.
