Around the world without fossil fuels

London-based Andy Pag today announces plans to travel around the world in a car without using any fossil fuels.

"If we can make it around the world without using fossil fuels, I hope motorists will consider using alternatives for their daily commute or school run, there are plenty of good options out there." said Pag.

Andy Pag is no stranger to ecological adventure travel, having driven 8,500 kilometres (about 5,282 miles) to Timbuktu in Mali, West Africa last year using bio-diesel made from waste cocoa butter.

Travelling under the humorous 'Chocolate Powered Biotruck Expedition' title, the journey is claimed to be the world's first carbon neutral expedition.

Following on from that trip, Pag organised the 'Grease to Greece Rally', where competing teams powered their cars from cooking oil they had to obtain from restaurants along the route between London and Athens.

"The rally showed that you can fill up on sustainable fuel as you drive across Europe, and for free!" states Pag. "The next challenge is to drive around the world without using crude oil."

Acknowledging that there has been plenty of debate surrounding the use of potential food, or land to grow food, for the creation of bio-fuels, Pag confirmed that all of the fuel used in the year-long trip will be sustainably produced, free of transportation emissions and won't affect the production of food:

"Using waste oils, oils from desert plants, and algae oil cultivated at sea, has no effect on food production or deforestation. And by filling up direct from the restaurants or farms there are no emissions from transporting the fuel."
