GEM (previously known as the Guild of Experienced Motorists), a not-for-profit road safety organisation, has this week urged the government to put in place orange school uniforms across the country for the dark months of autumn and winter.
Chief Executive of GEM, David Williams, explained: "Bright orange tabards or over vests are very inexpensive items these days and make a real visibility difference. Parents and school staff should check they are worn over jumpers, blazers and coats when children and young adults set off on their way home after school or college."
The new tack is part of GEM's ongoing campaign to stop the government from changing the clocks once a year, which often means children walking home in the dark.
"We need days as bright as possible when children are walking home," said Williams. "This is a simple way to save life and injury and totally logical."
British Summer Time ends on October 26th this year, when we change our clocks back one hour.
