Ford has announced it will cut the production of its Transit van in the UK by half.
The company's Southampton plant built nearly 75,000 Ford Transits last year, that figure expected to drop to just 35,000 by 2011.
The announcement was made by a company statement, Brian Bennett, Ford of Britain's Corporate Affairs manager stating in the release that job losses will take place but no numbers can be formally announced.
The Southampton plant employs just under 1,300 workers, Ford having built its hugely successful Transit van on the site for 32 years.
It's thought that Ford's production plant in Turkey will increase its Transit production. It is cheaper to build Transits abroad than in the UK.
Some Transit production is expected to remain at the Southampton facility, Ford stating it will continue to source chassis cab versions of the new Transit that's expected to arrive in 2011.
