Mitsubishi Evo X

The roll-out of the new Lancer Evolution X is turning into a bit of a farce. There have been more concept versions than you can shake a divining rod at, but apparently the car revealed at this week's Sydney Show is in fact the final production version. That's despite the fact that Mitsubishi is claiming that the car makes its 'world debut' at next week's Tokyo Show...

Regardless, it's finally out and we already know what's in store. Evo fans can relax in the knowledge that, despite one of the largest overhauls in its history, the main DNA of the Evo is intact. That means it still has a high-revving, turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine and a trick four-wheel drive system. The former is all new though and has numerous changes. In Japan, the power output is officially 276bhp, but rumours suggest that this is highly pessimistic, so we expect UK cars to be rated at about 300bhp.

Underneath, the renowned chassis has been further tweaked and buyers will for the first time have the option of a dual-clutch gearbox. Called the Sport Shift Transmission (SST), it works on essentially the same principle as VW's excellent DSG 'box. We can't wait to try it for ourselves!
