It's indicative of just how busy the car manufacturers are when VW chooses the relatively unknown Sydney Show to launch its new high-performance version of the Touareg SUV. The R50 is the product of VW's 'Individual' division, the group also responsible for the current 'R'-badged Golf and Passat.

Although the R50 packs 345bhp and an eye watering 627lb.ft of torque, it is not thanks to a huge gas-guzzling V8. No, the R50 is based on the 5.0-litre V10 TDI powerplant instead and yes, it's a turbodiesel. Fuel consumption is relative at this level, so don't expect all that extra grunt to come for free. Still, a top speed of nearly 150mph and a 0-62mph time of 6.7 seconds are there for the taking in the modified Touareg.

Customers are as likely to be interested in the styling modifications, which on the outside amount to a distinctive body kit and massive 21-inch wheels, while the interior is tastefully appointed in leather and bright aluminium inlays. The R50 should reach the UK early next year at a projected price tag of more than sixty grand.
