The Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZERO is a real three-in-one car. That's because three versions of the BlueZERO will go on display at Detroit, all based on the same car, called the E-Cell, the F-Cell and the E-Cell Plus
The trio are all based on the 'sandwich floor' architecture that debuted with the original Mercedes A-Class, which allows the engine to be packaged in a more efficient way in the cabin, liberating more passenger space.
The E-Cell concept has a range of up to 120 miles using a lithium ion battery pack, while the E-Cell Plus is a hybrid that adds a three-cylinder engine which can charge the battery on the move for a range of up to 370 miles. The first 60 miles of the 370 are on battery power alone. The F-Cell uses, as the name suggests, a fuel cell powered by hydrogen and connected to a 100Kw motor. The F-Cell is good for a 0-60mph dash of 11 seconds.
The idea of the trio is to provide a practical solution for every motorist, and the tried-and-tested platform means the car has a proven safety record, as well as providing plenty of luggage and passenger space - qualities that are lacking in some electric and fuel cell vehicles.
